What is Pomalidomide:

Pomalidomide is a thalidomide analogue and FDA-approved prescription medication. This medication is widely used to treat Multiple Myeloma (cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell). Sometimes, you may hear your health specialist refer to pomalidomide as an IMiD agent, which is short for immunomodulating.

The medicine Pomalidomide is:

  • Proven promising with dexamethasone if cancer (MM) stops responding to lenalidomide and a proteasome inhibitor (PI).
  • A pill (capsule) that can be taken wherever is convenient for you. Pomalidomide is taken with dexamethasone.
  • Not a traditional chemotherapy, an infusion, or an injection

Why Pomalidomide:

If Multiple Myeloma stops responding to lenalidomide and a proteasome inhibitor (PI), Pomalidomide in combination with dexamethasone may be effective. Over the course of multiple myeloma, your doctor will monitor your disease/MM progression by evaluating the presence of M protein in the blood. A large boost in this protein, or M spike, can represent that your multiple myeloma has relapsed and is no longer responding to the medicines you’re taking. So, a kind of different treatment approach/option will need to be considered. Pomalidomide capsules have been assessed in those with relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) who had taken lenalidomide and a protease inhibitor (PI).

Mechanism of Action:

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a kind of disease that typically affects the body’s immune/defense system. IMiD/immunomodulating agents, like Pomalidomide, work with the immune system to help combat Multiple Myelomas. Pomalidomide, when taken along with dexamethasone, was demonstrated to work in three different ways in animal models and in vitro:

  • Stimulates: Helps boost the function of certain cells used by the immune/defense system to fight myeloma.
  • Strikes: Targets and demolishes myeloma cells, even those resistant to the medicine lenalidomide.
  • Starves: Helps scale down new myeloma cell growth by limiting the supply of blood.

Possible side effects of Pomalidomide:
While on treatment with this medicine, you may experience side effects. Some of these side effects may be common or serious. It’s necessary to talk to your health specialist about the side effects you feel while taking Pomalidomide.
